James Brown scoops bronze at Paralympics

11 September, 2012

James Brown - Smartline Customer

Smartline would like to congratulate our client, James Brown, who is visually impaired, and his sighted pilot Damien Shaw from Mullingar who together clocked a time of 31:13.00 to secure their place on the podium.

The 47 year-old is competing in his fifth Paralympic Games having represented Great Britain previously at both summer and winter Paralympic Games in athletics, cross-country skiing and the biathlon. This is his third medal but the first for 28 years when in his first Paralympic Games in 1984 he won gold on the track (800m and 1500m).

Brown combines his sport with running a social enterprise and a software company but admits: “The cycling is a different ball game altogether. The passing of time and the elevation of Paralympic sport over all those years but I’ve never worked in an environment like this where we have proper professional coaching and sports science and medical back up.

James Brown is Performance and Technology Manager of Active Impact and founder of Smart Outcomes (both websites designed by Smartline).

Town is open for business, says MP

11 September, 2012

Abid Naser at the House of Commons reception

Politicians and business leaders helped to promote Tewkesbury at a champagne reception.

Around 120 people gathered for town MP Laurence Robertson's latest bid to spread the word that Tewkesbury is more than holding its own.

Keen to dispel any lingering rumours that it is struggling after the 2007 floods, he invited civic leaders and national politicians to the event at the House of Commons' Terrace Marquee.

A key speech was given by Sainsbury's representative Jamie Baker about why the retail giant had chosen Tewkesbury as a site for a hoped-for new store.

Mr Robertson said: "It was about promoting the area. The message is that, although we were flooded five years ago, we're fine now so come to Tewkesbury."

Sue Lambert, chairman of the Tewkesbury branch of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: "It was a really good opportunity to promote Tewkesbury further."

Smart Move For Web Design Team

01 April, 2012

Running Your Own Business is Rewarding

29 February, 2012

This is the message Abid shared with ‘A’ level students when he and members of the local Federation of Small Businesses branch visited Tewkesbury School recently.
Abid is the vice-chair of the FSB and he frequently volunteers his time to inspire the next generation of budding entrepreneurs into business. The FSB team was invited by the Head of the Sixth Form to discuss the advantages of running a business with the students who were also encouraged to identify the potential pitfalls of self-employment.
“It was a most successful morning” commented Abid “I believe it’s important to show young people that there is an alternative route for them after completing their education and training and with the right support running your own business can be a rewarding option”.

The Team Go Green

23 February, 2012

After attending an energy efficiency business event run by Tewkesbury Borough Council, the Smartline team will be going green by identifying ways to make energy savings and reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
Abid found the event a real eye opener and by following a few simple steps he anticipates it will make a real saving for his company. Staff will now be switching off unnecessary lighting and office equipment and turning off their PCs before leaving the office. The team hopes to carry out a more in-depth survey in the next few months and draw up a green action plan.
Smartline already operate a paperless office - only printing when absolutely necessary, and recycle printer ink cartridges to help reduce waste going to landfill.

Abid pitches in the Dragons Den

21 February, 2012

Smartline Managing Director and Vice Chairman for the FSB Tewkesbury branch, Abid Naser might not be a multi-millionaire just yet, but he found himself in the 'Dragon's Den' last week. For those of you who are not familiar with the popular TV series, budding entrepreneurs get three minutes to pitch their business ideas to five multi-millionaires willing to invest their own cash in a new business venture.
This time it was the turn of Tewkesbury School pupils to pitch to local business professionals. Abid was only too pleased to help out and support the next generation of young entrepreneurs. Headteacher, Gary Watson commented "our students gained a great deal from the day and really valued the experience".

Business as usual at Sudeley Castle

16 November, 2011

Members of the Smartline team were recently invited by Tewkesbury Borough Council to organise the town's autumn B2B business and networking event. The successful event held in the beautiful setting of Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe attracted around 160 delegates and 70 exhibitors. The event was opened by the Borough Mayor and lead member for economic development, Dave Waters, and was followed by a morning of seminars and a networking business luncheon attended by over 80 local business professionals.
The Smartline stand manned by Abid, Mo and Mandi attracted a crowd of startup businesses who were all eager to find out more about Smartline's website packages. (did you want to provide a link through to your basic brochure website package here). The team is now looking forward to helping a handful of new businesses on their way to success and have also been commissioned to redesigning several existing web sites to improve their search engine rankings and increase traffic
Abid commented "This was our third Tewkesbury B2B event and it was a real success. We have had so much positive feedback that it was worth all the hard work".

Runaway success at the Racecourse

30 August, 2011

Over one hundred delegates gathered at Cheltenham Racecourse in February to join international business growth expert, Richard Denny for an exclusive business seminar entitled Win New Business.
Richard was accompanied by his wife, Dorothy Denny both of whom share an excellent track record in the business world. Richard's bestselling books and training materials were up for grabs, with Richard offering to personalise and sign them on the night. Selling to Win is recognised worldwide as one of the best books ever written on selling.

We would like to thank everyone who purchased Charity Grand Prize Draw tickets which raised £165 for local cancer charity, Tenovus. Prizes on offer included exclusive race tickets for two, kindly donated by our generous hosts. Special thanks to Clare and Fiona who joined us for the evening from Tenovus.

We wish to thank our event sponsors Tiger Fish, Officeworx, FSB and Furry Feet TV for their support and generous sponsorship, and we are also grateful to racecourse staff who were fabulous hosts.
The event brought together a diverse range of businesses owners, who by the end of an educational and highly thought provoking evening, were all eager to try out Richard's advice in their own business setting to reap the rewards of being more customer focused.
It was certainly worth all the hard work and planning which was started many weeks in advance by the B2B Events Team at Smartline culminating in a very successful and enjoyable evening.

J9 Business Group meet at the Roses Theatre

14 December, 2010

The show must go on …

In December Abid found himself centre stage at the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury.

With no time for a dress rehearsal, Abid (pictured second from the right) was whisked away back stage to join members of the J9 Business Group. Attendees at the management team meeting were treated to the hospitality of theatre staff, and were made to feel stars of the show.

This year’s pantomime, Dick Whittington, has proved very popular. Reassuringly, Abid has confirmed that his business will be staying firmly put in Tewkesbury rather than following in the footsteps of Mr Whittington and his cat - moving to London to seek their fortune!

20 March, 2010

Abid has been involved with the Tewkesbury Branch of the FSB for a number of years now.   He knows how important it is to support small local businesses, and how difficult it can be setting up a new business in the current economic climate.

In appreciation of Abid’s hard work and for all the time he has put in supporting the work of the local FSB branch, he has been awarded the prestigious FSB Business Star Award 2009

Abid was very surprised to receive the award which was presented to him by Sue Lambert, FSB Branch Chair and Bruce Keen, the branch Regional Representative.
'It was a surprise to me but appreciated that highly.  Fellow committee members of our local FSB branch have put a great effort to assist small businesses in our area and all are dedicated to help when possible.  I do thank them for this award and for the great team effort'.
